Summer vacation is the perfect time to relax, unwind and have fun. However, it’s essential to keep in mind that oral care should not be neglected during this time. Summer activities such as eating sugary foods, drinking acidic drinks, and swimming in chlorinated water can harm your teeth. Here are six tips to protect your teeth during summer vacation.

1. Stay Hydrated

With the hot summer sun, it’s crucial to stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water is not only good for your overall health, but it’s also essential for oral health. Water helps to rinse away food particles and bacteria that can cause tooth decay and bad breath. Additionally, drinking water with fluoride can help strengthen your teeth and prevent cavities.

2. Limit Sugary Foods

Even though summer is a time for sweets, it is important to cut back on the amount of sugary foods and beverages you consume during this season. Consuming sugary foods and drinks such as ice cream, candy, and soda might make your teeth more susceptible to decay. If you choose to partake in sugary snacks, you should make it a point to clean your teeth thoroughly afterward by brushing and flossing. Consuming water after a meal that is high in sugar can assist in the removal of any sugar that may still be present in the mouth.

3. Use a Mouthguard

The summer months are ideal for engaging in outdoor pursuits such as playing sports. It is imperative that you wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth whenever you participate in a contact sport such as basketball, soccer, or football. Utilizing a mouthguard can aid in the prevention of tooth chips, fractures, and other dental problems. Your dentist can create custom mouthguards for you to provide a comfortable fit and the highest possible level of protection for your teeth.

4. Avoid Chewing Ice

It may seem like a good idea to chew on ice during the hot summer days, but doing so is actually bad for your teeth. Ice chewing can lead to dental damage, including fractures, chipping, and even erosion of the enamel of your teeth. Instead of satisfying your want for something cold to chew on, why don’t you satisfy it with some frozen fruit?

5. Limit Acidic Drinks

Acidic drinks such as lemonade, sports drinks, and citrus juices can erode your tooth enamel over time. Enamel erosion can lead to tooth sensitivity and decay. If you do consume acidic drinks, use a straw to minimize contact with your teeth, and drink water afterward to help rinse away any acid.

6. Rinse After Swimming

Swimming is a great way to cool off during hot summer days. However, the chlorine in swimming pools can harm your teeth. Chlorine can cause enamel erosion and tooth sensitivity over time. After swimming, rinse your mouth with water to help eliminate any chlorine residue. Make sure to brush your teeth after swimming to remove any leftover chlorine particles.

Conclusion

Summer vacation is the perfect time for fun and relaxation, but it’s essential to keep up with your oral hygiene routine. By following these six tips, you can help protect your teeth during summer vacation. Remember to stay hydrated, limit sugary foods, wear a mouthguard during contact sports, avoid chewing ice, limit acidic drinks, and rinse after swimming. With these tips, you can enjoy your summer vacation while keeping your teeth healthy and strong.

I attended my first appointment today which was due to an emergency service I needed to have done. It’s been years since I’ve seen a dentist due to a poor experience I endured while in the military. From the moment I walked in door I could feel my anxiety decrease due to the warm welcome I received from the staff. I felt like I had already been a patient there for a long time. I was unsure what to expect from treatment and cost perspective. The Office Admins and the Dentist both walked me through the work needed, costs associated and helped work with me on a price and payment plan that was affordable for my personal situation. They showed compassion and truly listened to me during this phase of the appointment. In a time where I was feeling pain, anxiety and unsure if I was able to get the work done due to not having insurance, this amazing team went above and beyond helping me understand all of my options. I was instantly met with empathy and compassion, two things we don’t see much these days. Once the paper work was done, the Dentist was up next and outperformed my expectations. I really appreciate people who are passionate about what they do. I know I wasn’t an easy patient to deal with, and the work was completed without any pain or discomfort. It was nice to have a great experience at the dentist and I will be going back for all of my dental needs. Thank you so much!!!

I am so delighted that Danvers Aesthetic/ Dentistry has re-created their front office, their team, their personable technicians who not only do a terrific job in cleaning-flossing-polishing-removing plaque, but also the leading dentist who is knowledgeable, compassionate and first-rate in her assessment of what should be done about the choices facing each patient. In my case, implants were the way to go and I am grateful for the wisdom that led me to my decision. The entire office is now a sensitive, working team that takes top notch care of every patient. I recommend these women, wholeheartedly and without reservation!
