You’re ready to hit the refresh button on your smile and enjoy a balanced, beautiful, chip- and stain-free look. But did you know there are possible side effects that can come with veneer treatment? Knowing what to expect after your new teeth are bonded in place will minimize any concerns you might have. To feel more confident in your decision to choose veneers, here are a few things you should know so you aren’t surprised after treatment.
What Might You Experience After Receiving Veneers?
Your smile transformation is an exciting experience, but you may not realize it can take some time to adjust to your new teeth. Most patients acclimate to these restorations fairly quickly, but don’t be surprised if you notice any of the following in the days after treatment:
- Mild Sensitivity: Although temporary, your teeth may become slightly sensitive to hot and cold temperatures. This is mainly because your dentist must remove a small amount of enamel to ensure the veneer bonds well to your tooth.
- Minor Gum Irritation: It’s normal for your gums to feel tender after veneer placement. Swelling and inflammation are common but shouldn’t last more than a few days.
- A Change in Your Speech: Veneers can cause a temporary lisp to form. Your tongue needs time to adjust to the additional thickness. Once it does, you’ll sound normal again, but until then, you may struggle to say certain words.
- Changes in Shading: Your cosmetic dentist will get your veneers as close as possible to your natural tooth shade, but it’s possible a slight variation can occur. Also, if you whiten your natural teeth or they become stained, your veneers will likely stand out instead of blending in.
Should You Still Get Veneers?
Even with the potential side effects that can occur after veneer placement, they are worth the investment. Most concerns are temporary, and others can be easily remedied (shading differences). If your veneers no longer match the rest of your smile, you can have them replaced or discuss other ways to fix this problem.
With veneers, you can enjoy your new teeth for more than a decade with proper care, so don’t let worries or concerns keep you from achieving your smile goals.
